German Tinplate Suspended Flying Aeroplane, circa 1920s–30s,...
German Tinplate Suspended Flying Aeroplane, circa 1920s–30s, a small early German pressed-tinplate toy monoplane, circa 1920s–30s, the metal fuselage stamped 'GERMANY', of simple lightweight pressed-metal construction, finished predominantly in silver, with rectangular monoplane wings, separate tail surfaces, two-bladed metal propeller and simple wheeled undercarriage with contrasting blue-painted hubs, a cord attachment is fitted to the upper fuselage, apparently allowing the aircraft to be suspended during operation, approximately 140 mm long × 100 mm wingspan.* Literature: The toy appears to have been designed as a suspended or circling flying novelty, the aircraft being hung from its cord and propelled or rotated by its mechanical arrangement, rather than functioning solely as a conventional floor-running aeroplane, such inexpensive but ingenious aircraft formed part of the large German export trade in miniature tin toys during the inter-war period.
