German WWII Kyffhaeuser Memorial Enamel Stick Pin Badge

[ translate ]

A shield-shaped enamel stick pin depicting the Kyffhaeuser Monument tower in black over a white field, above an orange lower section bearing a roundel with a swastika. The reverse bears the maker's mark "GES. GESCH." alongside the mounting stem. Badges of this design were associated with veterans' and nationalist commemorative organizations linked to the Kyffhaeuser Monument, a memorial erected in the late nineteenth century.

The Kyffhaeuser Monument, completed in 1896 atop the Kyffhaeuser mountain in Thuringia, commemorated Emperor Wilhelm I and evoked the medieval legend of Frederick Barbarossa, symbolising German national unity under the Hohenzollern monarchy. It became the namesake and spiritual centre of the Kyffhaeuserbund, a large umbrella organisation of ex-servicemen's and veterans' associations founded in the imperial era, which continued into the Weimar and Nazi periods. Following the Nazi seizure of power the Kyffhaeuserbund was progressively brought into line with NSDAP organisations, and its badges and insignia, such as this piece, came to incorporate Nazi symbolism including the swastika, reflecting the regime's absorption of nationalist veterans' culture into its own commemorative apparatus.
