German WWII RAD Membership Stickpin Badge by B.S.W.

[ translate ]

A stickpin badge of oval form with red enamel border surrounding a white field, bearing a black and silver-toned emblem combining a swastika above a mattock, spade, and sheaf of wheat motif associated with the Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD). The design is worked in raised metal against enamel infill. The reverse carries a maker mark reading "B.S.W." along with additional stamped numerals.

This form of stickpin was worn as a membership or supporter's badge associated with the National Labor Service organization of the period.

The Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD) was the compulsory national labour service of the Third Reich, established by law in 1935, through which young German men (and later women) performed manual labour on land reclamation, construction, and agricultural projects, alongside paramilitary-style training and Nazi ideological indoctrination. Its insignia, combining agricultural tools with the swastika, symbolised the regime's fusion of labour, land, and National Socialist ideology. Badges of this type were worn by members or supporters to signal affiliation with the organisation, which by the late 1930s had become a mandatory stage in the state's mobilisation of youth prior to military service.
