Anna Selbdritt
gilt and polychromed oak, set with a rock crystal cabochon
71.5cm., 28⅛in.
Catalogue Note:
The style and composition of this charming Anna Selbdritt place it among a group of sculptures of the same subject thought to have originated in workshops in Cologne around 1470-1490. In the scholarship this grouping is usually associated with a Virgin formerly in Dominican Church, Cologne, and now in St Andrew’s Church in the same city (op. cit., p. 15). The Anna Selbdritt groups thought to have originated in this workshop milieu are characterised by sweet, doll-like features, heavy folds of drapery around the legs, and analogous draped veils worn by Saint Anne, as exhibited in the present group.
Compositionally the present sculpture relates to an Anna Selbdritt in the Schnütgen Museum, Cologne (inv. no. A 496, op. cit. no. 28), which equally shows Saint Anne enthroned, with the Virgin, of significantly smaller dimensions, seated on her left knee. The present figures’ distinctive facial features, with pointed retroussé noses and small, dimpled smiles, find a parallel in the Virgin of a Saint Anne group in the same museum (inv. no. A 1088, op. cit., no. 29). Both groups are attributed to Cologne workshops and dated around 1480.
