German, probably Nuremberg, 17th century and later
A pair of ice skates
niello-decorated iron, with a flat, removable fastening loop
each skate adorned with cartouches depicting hunting trophies and weapons, one with the figure of Diana and the other with Mars
possibly reused and transformed from a casket in the 18th or 19th century
7 by 29 by 5.7cm., 2¾ by 11⅜ by 2¼in.
(2)
Catalogue Note:
Of extraordinary refinement, these skates were certainly intended for ceremonial rather than daily use. The niello decorations - featuring figures, trophies of arms, scrolls, and stylized friezes - as well as the scroll-cut upper edges, are similar to those found on the side mounts of some precious caskets produced in Nuremberg in the second half of the 16th century.
Provenance:
Milgram, a U.S. Army medical officer;
By descent to his daughter-in-law, Carol Milgram;
Jan Biegelaar, the Netherlands.
