Germany - Rare autograph of the U-boat - Lieutenant Günther Prien - 1940

Günther Prien was born on the 16th of January, 1908. He joined the Reichsmarine on the 16th of January 1933. From 11 May 1936 he was First Guard Officer (I WO) on U 26. There were deployments in the Spanish Civil War. On 1 October 1939, Prien was commissioned by the commander of the Dönitz submarines to enter the British war port of Scapa Flow. This order resembled a "suicide squad". On 8 October, U 47 departed from Kiel and embarked on the 1100 km long journey. After entering Scapa Flow, they sunk the Royal Oak with torpedoes. On 24 May, 1941, the High Command of the Wehrmacht announced that U 47 had not returned from an operation and that Prien's death had to be expected.
