Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde - View of Cleve
Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde
View of Cleve
Oil on canvas (relined). 57 x 83 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: g.bergheyde 1661.
Gerrit Berckheyde's 1661 view of the town fortifications of Cleves is listed in C. Lawrence's catalogue raisonné with an unknown whereabouts and unclear topography. A comparison with a view by Jan van der Heyden (1637-1712), which shows Cleves as seen from the Mühlberg, suggests that the present picture is of the town wall of Cleves bordering the Kermisdahl river (see RKD picture archive, no. 64963).

Kees Hermsen, The Hague, 1933 - Gallery Giorgio Caretto, Turin, 1980s (label verso). - Belgian private collection.
Literature
