Gervasoni, Carlo (1762-1819)
Esempi della Scuola della Musica.

Italy, early 19th century.

Quarto format musical manuscript on laid paper consisting of calligraphic title and ninety-five numbered leaves, each with a musical lesson whose title is at the top in a fine secretarial hand, brown ink throughout, text of each leaf within a double border with bars below, on rectos only, beginning with four leaves of "Caratteri Musicali," followed by four leaves of lessons each for soprano, contralto, tenor, and basso cantante voices, gravicembalo (an early piano), followed by multiple lessons for organ, violin, cello, double bass, French horn, oboe, flute, exercises to demonstrate tenets of musical theory, including counterpoint, chords, cadence, modulation, movement, phrasing, period, melody, rules of harmony, followed by examples of instrumental sonatas, duets, trios, quartets, quintets, symphonies, vocal solos, duets, trios, quartets, quintets, and ending with six leaves dedicated to the "Otto Reali," bound in full contemporary marbled sheepskin with streaks in browns and green, gilt-tooled boards and spine, and marbled endleaves, 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 in.

In Piacenza, circa 1800, Niccolò Orcesi published a work that closely resembles the present manuscript. It bears the same title and consists of 100 leaves of musical examples printed on rectos only. The Esempi was meant to be a companion to Gervasoni's Scuola della Musica, but the connection between this manuscript and the printed version is unclear.
