Gesshu Soko (1618 - 1696)

A Japanese Zen calligraphy, ink on paper mounted as hanging scroll, 51 x 30cm, with a Japanese box and a certificate of proof of export of the national treasure/ important cultural goods from Japan, dated 23 December 2015.

cf. Gesshū Sōko was a Japanese Zen Buddhist monk and teacher of the Sōtō Zen school, served in Daijo-ji in Kaga, Zenjo-ji in Kyoto, Japan.

The calligraphy may be translated: Life and death are of supreme importance. Life is too uncertain. Here today, gone tomorrow. Each of us must strive to awaken. Time and tide wait for no man. There is very few karma to be born as a human being, I already received life. There is very few opportunity to listen to the teachings of Buddha, I am already endowed. If I cannot save myself in this world, when shall I be saved?
