Partially printed DS
A partially printed lithograph document signed by Union General Joshua Chamberlain. 1p, measuring 21.75" x 16.75", [New York], n.d. [ca. 1870s]. The document confirms the status of Private D. C. Mitchell, 105th PA Vet. Volunteers, as a former solider and current member of the Society of the Army of the Potomac. Signed in the lower right, "Joshua L. Chamberlain", as the Society's President and countersigned by Horatio C. King as Secretary. Printed by noted lithographers Major & Knapp of New York, featuring various war scenes and vignette portraits of Generals McClellan, Meade, Hooker, and Burnside. Exhibits darkened offset toning and scattered soiling throughout. Two small, isolated tears present at the far edges on either side. Evident feathering to Chamberlain's signature, not affecting overall clarity. Otherwise, very attractive.
Joshua Chamberlain (1828-1914) was an American college professor and politician from Maine who volunteered for service in 1862. Over the course of the war, he would become a highly respected and decorated Union officer, reaching the rank of brigadier general. Chamberlain is best remembered for his gallantry at the Battle of Gettysburg, during which he led a bayonet charge and was later awarded the Medal of Honor.
Horatio Collins King (1837-1918) served in the armies of the Potomac and Shenandoah from August 1862 until May 1865, when he resigned with the rank of brevet colonel. King also earned the Medal of Honor for actions near the Battle of Dinwiddie Courthouse on March 31, 1865, marking the start of the Appomattox campaign.
