Gettysburg WIA Inscribed Book
Leather-bound 1860 volume by Samuel Lawrence D.G.M., entitled “The Moral Design of Freemasonry” which also includes “The Vision of Achmed” by the same author. The volume contains a clear ink inscription from a “Chas. F. Overhalt, Co. C 97th N.Y. Vols.” and “Presented to Lt. A.B. Snow.” While there is not a certain match to the first name, it could be an alias used by Charles F. Hays who first served in the 83rd New York Infantry before transferring to Company C, 97th NY Infantry as a corporal on 6/7/1864. More importantly, the volume was given to 1st Lieutenant Archibald B. Snow of Company I, 97th NY Infantry. Snow was wounded in the face at Gettysburg on 7/1/1863 and later captured at Weldon Railroad, VA on 8/18/1864.
