Giant Eland Antelope Horns from CAR 1900's
These massive horns came from a giant eland from the Central African Republic. The giant eland, also known as the Lord Derby eland, is the largest antelope in the world. It is a herbivore that eats grass and foliage from savannas and open forest, and it is a strong antelope that can run for miles and miles. The baptist minister who was doing missionary work in the country shot the male stag himself and nearly set a world’s record for Giant Eland horns in the process. The stag weighed in at 1800 pounds, but the horns fell three centimeters (1 1/8 in.) short of the record. The horns measure 34 1/4 in. long and 24 1/4 in across between the tips. From the Dale Baker collection.
