Gibeon Meteorite-Etched Slice with Fusion Crust
Gibeon Meteorite-Etched Slice with Fusion Crust
Iron-Nickel, Fine Octahedrite
Kalahari Desert, Namibia, Africa
Weighing over two pounds, this Gibeon meteorite slice from an old collection boasts original fusion crust and an extremely detailed fine octahedral Widmanstatten pattern. Gibeon meteorites are in very high demand as they are hard to find and possess a stunning internal crystalline structure when cut and etched. This interesting geometric pattern resulted from the separation of two alloys of nickel, taenite and kamicite, which occurred on the large parent asteroid before it was blown apart early in the formation of the solar system. This crystalline pattern does not exist on any rocks on Earth and only forms when the iron core of the asteroid cools very slowly at no more than one degree Celsius per million years. Gibeon meteorites were found in the Kalahari Desert of Namibia, Africa from a fall that occurred thousands of years ago. Measuring 5 ¼ x 4 x 4/10in; Weighing 1002 grams
