Gil Elvgren (American, 1914-1980) Bewitching, 19
Gil Elvgren (American, 1914-1980) Bewitching, 1956 Oil on canvas 30 x 24 inches (76.2 x 61.0 cm) Signed lower left: Elvgren Gil Elvgren created the present work for a 1956 Brown & Bigelow calendar as a part of his American Beauties series, and is one of the few nude pieces he created during his time working for B&B. The work is inscribed with a personal note from the artist above his signature that reads: "To Joe Collins with many thanks for a wonderful time. Hope this finds a spot in your number one bedroom. Gil." It is quite possible that this was a gift to the long-time New York Yankee ballplayer, though that is unconfirmed. Bewitching appears as figure 359 in Gil Elvgren: All His Glamorous American Pin-Ups by Charles G. Martignette and Louis K. Meisel (Taschen, 1999) and also appears as the cover of Pin-Up Nudes II by Max Allen Collins (Collectors Press, 2002).
