The present portrait by Gilbert Stuart depicts William Stackpole (1779-1822) at the age of thirty. Stackpole was a graduate from Harvard and later went on to become a lawyer in Boston. This portrait aides in documenting Stuart's time in Boston as few artifacts remain from this period due to the artist's financial troubles, a sale of the late artist's belongings following his death, and a fire in his daughter's studio in 1850. A rare account book sheet in Stuart's hand survived, which lists an appointment with a "X-Stackpole" in 1808. It's plausible that this record could reflect the artist's appointment with the sitter. Stuart captured more than 1,000 portraits of politicians, lawyers, and prominent American families throughout his lifetime.
