Gilded copper Christ. Possibly from the Meuse Valley (La Meuse). Late Romanesque. Late 13th century.
Christ wears a crown topped with fleurs de lis and is covered with a long and elaborate loincloth.
Mosan art was based in the Meuse Valley, has Carolingian and Ottoman influences, and was active in the 12th and 13th centuries. The Mosan region is in the area of the former diocese of Liège, which was principally in territory which is now in Belgium but also extended into zones which are now in France, the Netherlands and Germany.
