[ translate ]

Gilded copper Christ with champlevé enamel. Limoges. France. Romanesque. 13th century.
Christ is crucified, alive, covered by a long lapis lazuli blue loincloth and an unusual belt, which rather than being enamelled, which would be more typical, is decorated with hammering on the gilded copper and falls to the feet. Provenance: acquired in Christie's London on 2/7/1996.
Comparative literature: F. Stohlman ."Gli Smalti del Museo Sacro Vaticano". Vatican City, 1939, p. 39, nº 538, pl XVIII; Paul Thoby "Les Croix Limousines de la fin du XIIème au debut du XIVème". Paris, Picard, 1953.
