Illustrated with 632 engraved plates. 63x48.5 cm (25x19"), period half red morocco, marbled boards and endpapers, raised bands, spines stamped in gilt, all edges gilt.Engravings and etchings of Gillray's marvelous caricatures and political cartoons which satirized the French, Napoleon, King George III, and the leading politicians of the day during the late 18th and early 19th century. He was, for the last four years before his death in 1815, insane. His original copper plates were later purchased by Henry Bohn at auction, who subsequently reissued them as here. The suppressed plates in the supplement are risqué, being bawdy or scatological in nature. Both volumes complete, volume 1 with portrait frontispiece, plates numbered 1-582, with additional plates 86*, 100*, 207*, 379*, 379**, 379***, and no plate 238, as issued; volume 2 is the supplement of 45 so-called "suppressed" plates.
