Während seines Kunststudiums in Rom schloss er Freundschaft mit Umberto Boccioni und Giacomo Balla, die gemeinsam und ungestüm nach neuen künstlerischen Ausdrucksformen suchten. 1906 reiste Severini nach Paris, wo er Juan Gris, Georges Braque, Paul Signac und Pablo Picasso begegnete, die ihm neue Weg der Kunst aufwiesen, darunter die neoimpressionistische und kubistische Malerei. Als einer der Unterzeichner des "Manifest der futuristischen Malerei" (1910) und Verfasser theoretischer Schriften zur Kunst gilt Severini als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der italienischen Avantgarde.

In späteren Jahren wechselte er immer wieder seinen künstlerischen Stil, malte religiöse Bilder und kehrte in seinem Spätwerk zum Kubismus zurück. 1955 nahm Severini die Einladung zur ersten documenta I in Kassel an, die dominiert war von abstrakter Kunst. In dieser gereiften Phase seines künstlerischen Schaffens entstand das bemerkenswerte und farblich fein nuancierte "Stillleben mit Flasche".

While studying art in Rome, he became friends with Umberto Boccioni and Giacomo Balla, who together impetuously sought new forms of artistic expression. In 1906, Severini traveled to Paris, where he met Juan Gris, Georges Braque, Paul Signac, and Pablo Picasso, who pointed him in new directions in art, including Neo-Impressionist and Cubist painting. As one of the signatories of the ''Manifesto of Futurist Painting'' (1910) and author of theoretical writings on art, Severini is considered one of the most important representatives of the Italian avant garde.

In later years, he repeatedly changed his artistic style, painting religious images and returning to Cubism in his late work. In 1955 Severini accepted the invitation to the first documenta in Kassel, which was dominated by abstract art. In this mature phase of his artistic work, he created the remarkable and finely nuanced ''Still Life with Bottle''.
