Gio Ponti - Cassina - Chair (4) - Superleggera

These 4 iconic black painted Superleggera chairs are overall in good condition, but 3 of the chairs have a tear on the side of the delicate Indian reed seats (canna d'India alla maniera chiavarina) - see photo. Having the chairs repaired or rereeded is therefore recommended.
. This is the Superleggera no. 699 series, designed in 1957 by the Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti for Cassina, the chair par excellence, symbolising the modernism in Italian design. I bought the chairs in 1985 for €500 (20,000 BEF at the time) apiece and I am the first owner. Nowadays the new price of these chairs is €1500 apiece. Please note: the new version is more robust and cost-effective because the seat consists of woven thread and not of Indian reed.
