Gio Ponti - Cassina - Set of chairs

[ translate ]

4 Cassina Superleggera 699 Gio Ponti chairs from the 1960s, kept in excellent aesthetic condition, 1 of the 4 is slightly wavering. The straw seats were restored in 2018, not original. Continuously made since 1957, The Superleggera represents an exclusive synthesis between Gio Ponti's research and Cassina's advanced experimentation, becoming an undisputed icon of modernity and handcrafted refinement. Its challenging construction is exemplified by the triangular section of the legs, of only 18 millimetres and with a minimum weight of 1700 grams, while the elastic and light ash structure is combined with the beech wood seat frame, more compact and resistant to loads. The machine-made wooden elements are manually finished through the meticulous procedures of brush bonding, cleaning the residual glue and stuffing the seat. Craftsmanship and industrial innovation thus meet in a "prime object", inspired by traditional Ligurian Chiavarine chairs, offered both in the classic version and in coloured variants with padded seat.
