Gioacchino da Fiore - Vaticinia Pontificum - 1300-2006

Vatican City.
Manuscript Ms. A. 2848.
It is the most famous manuscript with prophetic content. It contains 30 prophecies concerning the fate of the papacy and the Church and is attributed to the Italian mystic Gioacchino da Fiore.
The work contains symbolic links to historical events from the Vatican's past that have already occurred, as well as the present, and could even reveal the codes of humanity's future.
The last ten prophecies testify to the confidence in the arrival of the next angelic pope, a saint, liberator and charismatic who will stand out from his predecessors for his moral integrity and high spirituality and who will usher in an era of fundamental renewal of the Church.
In the Middle Ages, people's everyday lives were shaped by superstition and mystical prophecies. Day-to-day politics were in the hands of clergy and the political head of the Christian world was the pope in office.
The so-called Vaticinia Pontificum contain prophetic prophecies about the popes who held the highest office in the Catholic Church during the 13th and 14th centuries.
The popes are depicted here in high-quality portrait illustrations, together with allegorical animals or mythical creatures.
The allegorical, mystical texts, with the help of their metaphorically charged illustrations, interpreted the influence of the respective popes on the fate of the Catholic community worldwide.
Pope Urban VI is described here as a diabolical monster of the apocalypse. He was pope in a period that immediately followed the so-called Avignon papacy and was the first pope since 1309 to have his seat in Rome rather than Avignon.
His ascension to office triggered a chain of adverse events that ultimately led to the Western Schism.
