Giovanni Andrea de Ferrari, circle of
The Holy Family with Angels
Oil on canvas. 113 x 96 cm.
The painting, an atmospheric nocturnal scene of the Holy Family with angels, is probably to be placed within Genoese painting in the circle of Giovanni Andrea de Ferrari (c. 1598–1669). It bears an old attribution to Camillo Procaccini on the reverse.
An 18th-century variant of the present painting is in the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, inv. no. 463, as "German Master". An alternative attribution as "Austrian" has been suggested.
Provenance
In third generation in private collection, Rhineland.
