As shown in the photos, beautiful and uncommon sixteenth century book by Giovanni Battista Palatino entitled "Compendio Del Gran Volume De L'Arte Del Bene Et Leggiadramente Scrivere Tutte Le Sorti Di Lettere Et Caratteri, con le lor Regole Misure & Esempi" published in Rome by the heirs of Valerio & Luigi Dorico Fratelli in June 1566. In-4to (19. 8 x 13. 6 cm) , full parchment hardcover with title on the spine, 54 sheets (out of 64) containing numerous woodcut calligraphic elements in the text, decorated and engraved drop caps and woodcut on full page at the end. Missing sheets Ai, Bi, Ciii-viii, E8, F8 and H8 (in total 10 sheets) , first sheet (dedication to Paul III) with restored large defect at the bottom (see first photos) , some frayed edges, scattered stains, small tears and an amateur restoration (see photo no. 17) , that do not affect the reading of the text. However for detailed conditions page by page, look carefully at each photo depicting the entire work until the end. Giovanni Battista Palatino was the author of the best known and most printed Collection of Calligraphic Models of all times, which has always stood out for the quality of the engravings and for the quantity of letters depicted, testimony of a universal attention to writing addressed to all types of letters and interested in the graphic developments of which it is susceptible, regardless of practical use. FIRST EDITION of this compendium with only 8 copies listed in ICCU (Italian library system) . Have a good auction.
