[ translate ]

Splendid large original engraving, plate 63 of the series of 135 "Views of Rome", in the 1st or 2nd edition, still in Roman edition, depicting the remains of the Canopus, then believed to be a temple, today considered a Nymphaeum.

Within a cartouche at the bottom center, title and legend "A. Niches and fountains which were covered with tartars. B. Vault which was covered with white and other colored mosaics. C. The walls were covered with marble slabs. The back of this temple is surrounded by water preserves and vessels. From these signs I would believe that it must belong to the God Neptune rather than to any other Deity. Two large boulders fallen from the vault.
