Giovanni Battista Salvi, detto Sassoferrato (1609-1685), Da - Madonna Orante

[ translate ]

DESCRIPTION

"Praying Madonna", oil on canvas, 76x59cm, from the model by Giovanni Battista Salvi known as Sassoferrato.

A young Madonna with her hands clasped in a moment of prayer with deep and absorbed eyes seeks the gaze of the spectator. A white veil frames the right side of her face, appearing just under the large blue cloak that covers her head, then falling along her shoulders and arms and finally leaving room for the red fabric sleeves. The protagonist and emotional fulcrum of the work is the combination of face and hands, elements from which all the sweetness and transport of the subject shines through, factors even more strengthened by the faint halo that surrounds the Virgin's head, detaching the figure from the sepia background, projecting her into an immaterial dimension of otherworldly spirituality.

The work is a replica of a follower of Sassoferrato, an Italian painter of the 17th century who was a pupil of Domenichino and Guido Reni, taking up the model of the Praying Madonna of which Salvi himself made several replicas during his lifetime, some of the most valuable of which are preserved in the Rospigliosi Gallery in Rome, Episcopal Palace in Madrid and the Monastery of S. Chiara in Sassoferrato, the author's birthplace.

CONDITION REPORT

The general condition is excellent, the work appears intact in all its parts, without any loss of color and with craquelure consistent with the age of the object. The work shows signs of conservative restoration dating back to the 20th century, appearing relined and reframed on the reverse.

Tracked and insured shipping with appropriate packaging.
