Born into a family of sculptors and stonemasons, Giovanni Domenico Ferrucci moved to Florence at a young age to join the studio of Cesare Dandini where he went on to become one of the latter's foremost pupils. At the age of about 30 he set up a studio in Lucca where he was to remain, aside from a few commissions in Pistoia, for the rest of his life.
