This devotional work is characteristic of Giulio Francia's oeuvre. He was greatly influenced by the works of his famous father Francesco Francia but also by the "Raffaelismo" popularised by the Bolognese school of the early 16th century. This tendency was based on the influence of Raphael's "Ecstasy of Saint Cecilia" which was exhibited in San Giovanni in Monte (now the Pinacoteca Bologna).
