Giuseppe Volò, called il Vicenzino

[ translate ]

(Milan 1662 – after 1716 ?)
Carnations and other flowers, with grapes, apples and wild strawberries,
oil on canvas, 60 x 88 cm, framed
We are grateful to Alberto Cottino for suggesting the attribution of the present painting.

The present composition can be compared to other works by Giuseppe Volò, known as Vicenzino dei Fiori (1620–1671), including a still life in a private collection (see F. Arisi, Natura morta tra Milano e Parma in età barocca, Piacenza 1995, fig. 583).

Giuseppe Volò, son of the French flower painter Vicenzino Volò, came from a family of artists active in Milan. His sisters Margherita, later called Margherita Caffi (1647–1710) and Francesca, called the Vicenzina (1657–1700) were also painters. The family workshop, devoted mainly to still lifes, was certainly the most important in this field in the Lombard capital.
