Elaborate Venetian landscape attributable to the school of Giuseppe Zais. Oil painting on canvas. 18th century.

Giuseppe Zais (1709 -1781) was a Venetian painter, a high exponent of the Rococo period, a master of landscape painting.
Born to a family of modest means, Zais studied first in Treviso with Francesco Simonini then in Venice with Francesco Zuccarelli and Francesco Simonini. From Canaletto he assimilates the realistic rendering of rural and lagoon landscapes as well as villages and cities.
Much appreciated by his contemporaries, he became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice.
His copious production of paintings and watercolors is characterized by attention to detail, an always serene atmosphere and a bright color palette.
Zais is considered one of the most important Italian landscape painters of the 18th century. His stylistic signature had a significant influence on the evolution of landscape painting in Italy and Europe.

The bright glimpse of the composition proposed here highlights the centrality of the two figures, next to a lively stream, in the act of fishing. The observer's eye is then drawn to the elaborate architecture of the adjacent village, crossed by the foaming riverbed. All around there is a rich and lush natural scenery. The trees and their realistic foliage are drawn with great brush skill. The blue and accommodating sky welcomes some clouds with valuable highlights which, without interruption, surround the fresh mountains, with still summery colours.

The painting was relined in the nineteenth century and reframed in the last century.
Upon UV testing, a pictorial material texture is found with minimal chromatic additions.
In blue tones, the canvas deserves further cleaning and fixation of the elegant crackle.

The work is accompanied by a beautiful frame with an ancient patina.

Overall measurements: 81cm x 69cm.
