Graphic art in the 20th century [Expressionism]

From E.L. Kirchner to Max Beckmann, artists associated with German Expressionism in the early decades of the twentieth century took up the graphic art, the printmaking, with a collective dedication and fervor virtually unparalleled in the history of art. The woodcut, with its coarse gouges and jagged lines, is known as the preeminent Expressionist medium, but the Expressionists also revolutionized the mediums of etching and lithography to alternately vibrant and stark effect.

Curt Glaser (1879, Leipzig - 1943, Lake Placid, NY) was a German art historian, art critic and collector. He was one of the early supporters of Expressionist art in Germany,

Curt Glaser received his doctorate in medicine in Munich in 1902 and then began studying art history in Freiburg, Munich, and Berlin, where he worked with Heinrich Wölfflin in 1907 on Hans Holbein the Elder. From 1909 to 1920, he worked as a research assistant and assistant and from 1920 to 1924 as curator at the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett.

In 1903, Glaser married Elsa Kolker from Breslau, daughter of the industrialist and art collector Hugo Kolker, with whom he built up an important art collection including works by Max Beckmann, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Ernst Oppler, Henri Matisse and Edvard Munch.
From 1924 to 1933, Glaser was director of the Berlin Art Library until he was ousted by the National Socialists. He emigrated to Switzerland in June 1933. Before the emigration, he was forced to sell large parts of his collection under value through the auction house Max Perl. At times, Glasers also lived in Italy, where Glaser worked on a history of the Italian Renaissance. The couple emigrated in 1941 over Cuba to the United States and settled in New York.

The brother of famous German philosopher Ernst Cassirer, Bruno Cassirer (1872-1941[ was a publisher and gallery owner in Berlin who had a considerable influence on the cultural life of the city. In 1898, together with his cousin Paul Cassirer, he opened a gallery and bookshop at 35 Viktoriastraße near Kemperplatz, Berlin. On 2 May 1898, the artists' association Berlin Secession was established with Paul and Bruno as secretaries. For three years they acquainted the art and literature scenes of Berlin with the newest waves from Belgian, English, French and Russian culture. In 1902, he founded the monthly art journal "Kunst und Kunstler" (Art and Artist) which turned out to become an influential and prestigious forum until it was closed down by the Nazis in 1933.

In 1936, Jewish printers were removed from membership of the Reichsschrifttumskammer (RSK: Reich Chamber of Literature) and the last book appeared from the Cassirer publishing house. In 1938, part of the Cassirer family decided to emigrate to Oxford where Bruno founded a new publishing house. He died on 20 October 1941 in Oxford, England.
