Gold Ring w/ Roman Carnelian Intaglio (Youth)

[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely carnelian intaglio cabochon, finely incised with the image of a youth and set in a modern gold ring to be wearable. Facing right, the figure strides forward, raising one hand as the other holds a set of arrows or spears behind his back. He presents slender limbs, a bulging belly, and a short coiffure. The translucent salmon pink hue of the stone is nicely contrasted by the lustrous gold ring, which boasts an ovoid frame and tubular band. A beautiful combination of ancient art and modern style! Size (ring): 1" Diameter (2.5 cm); (intaglio): 0.7" L x 0.5" W (1.8 cm x 1.3 cm); gold quality: 93% (equivalent to 22K+); weight: 10.5 grams; US ring size: 4.25

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
