Gold Ring w/ Roman Carnelian Intaglio (Youth)

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely carnelian intaglio cabochon, finely incised with the image of a youth and set in a modern gold ring to be wearable. Facing right, the figure strides forward, raising one hand as the other holds a set of arrows or spears behind his back. He presents slender limbs, a bulging belly, and a short coiffure. The translucent salmon pink hue of the stone is nicely contrasted by the lustrous gold ring, which boasts an ovoid frame and tubular band. A beautiful combination of ancient art and modern style!
