Gorham/Whiting Coin Silver Baby/Youth Set in Original

[ translate ]

Coin Silver Baby/Youth Set
This is a great American coin silver baby or youth set in it original fitted walnut wood box that is blue velvet and satin lined. The set is original to itself as all pieces are identically monogrammed. The "lion cup" and napkin ring are made by Gorham and the three piece set of children's flatware is made by Whiting (which was later acquired by Gorham).
The cup stands approximately four inches tall to the top of the lion's head. The cup has an allover engraving of what appears to be morning glories. The cup is monogrammed "E. M. Connolly Apr. 21, 1868". Above this inscription there is a crest engraved of a hand and forearm holding a wreath. The cup is marked/stamped with "580" and the logo for the Gorham Mfg. Co., a lion, an anchor and a "G". The cup has a heavy weight feel to it. There are some minor, soft dents around the base of the cup where it probably came into contact with a highchair tray. The handle of the cup has a "thumb piece" of an opened mouth, roaring lion. The foot and cup rim have what appears to be a dye-rolled applied border.
Also made by Gorham and stamped with the same Gorham logo as the cup, is a napkin ring. The napkin ring is also stamped "371". The front of the napkin ring is engraved with the same forearm and hand holding a wreath as the cup is engraved and the reverse of the napkin ring is monogrammed "EMC".
The three piece flatware set, all silver flat handle knife, fork and spoon, is in the Whiting Grecian pattern. All three pieces are monogrammed with the "EMC" monogram as on the napkin ring. Above the monogram, the crest of the forearm and hand holding the wreath is engraved, the same as on the cup and on the napkin ring. All three flatware pieces are stamped "STARR & MARCUS COIN H.N. PAT. 1866".
The accompanying fitted box appears to be made of black walnut and has a shield shaped silver plaque on the top that is monogrammed with a matching "EMC" as on the silver pieces. The box is fitted with brass hinges and latches.
All pieces are in as found condition, no repairs or buffing has touched this set.
