Gotisches Retabel
Öl auf Holz.
150 x 190 cm.
Nizza, Anfang 16. Jahrhundert.

Gothic retable
Oil on panel.
150 x 190 cm.
Nice, early 16th century.
At the centre, a full-length figure of Saint Sebastian with bow and arrow (89.5 x 63.5 cm); the side panels with four scenes from the life of Saint Sebastian arranged in two superimposed registers. The anonymous artist responsible for this ensemble, characterised by an accessible, popular style and strong Italian influences, probably belonged to one of the groups of itinerant artists from the regions of Nice, Piedmont or Liguria who, during the 15th and 16th centuries, decorated the chapels in the valleys of the hinterland of Nice and the Var with frescoes and altarpieces. Although most of these works were created anonymously, a frescoed retable dedicated to Saint Sebastian, signed and dated 1516 by the Ligurian artist Andrea de Cella, survives at the end of the nave of the chapel at Entraunes in the Var valley. The present retable adopts a comparable format and arrangement of scenes, supporting a date in the same period.
