[ translate ]

DeWitt Clinton (1769-1828), a dominant figure in early nineteenth-century New York politics, served as both mayor of New York City and multiple-term governor of the state. He is most closely associated with the creation of the Erie Canal, championing and guiding the project that reshaped commerce and transportation in the United States by linking the Atlantic coast to the Great Lakes. Clinton also twice sought the presidency, in 1812 and 1824, and remained one of the most influential advocates of internal improvements in the young United States. An autograph letter signed "DeWitt Clinton," dated December 26, 1826, from Albany. 1 p. in ink, inlaid into a larger sheet. He writes to an unidentified correspondent named Jones, "I […] leave to introduce to you R. L. Smith Esqr of Auburn, a respectable Gentleman. He will explain his views to you."
