George III silver "Death of Francis" Medal 1802 MS64 NGC, BHM-532, 42mm. By J. Hancock. Obv. Bust left. Rev. Man standing in a mournful pose, accompanied by dog, agricultural fields in background. Decadent luster and sumptuous coloration highlight this unique specimen. The marbled fields of seafoam and aqueous blue are complimented by sharply struck, gold-tinged devices. In addition to serving as a Whig in the House of Lords, Bedford was an accomplished owner of racehorses and an experimental sheep breeder. The London neighborhood of Bloomsbury owes much to Bedford’s influence and generosity. This near-Gem example is the only known at either grading service.
