Great Britain, James II, Gold 5 Guineas, 1688, XF45 PCGS

Great Britain, James II, Gold 5 Guineas, 1688, XF45 PCGS
41.3 Grams. S-3397A, 2nd Bust. The edge is not visible in the slab but presumably it is TERTIO. A handsome, evenly circulated piece with remarkably unblemished surfaces. Usually these big "fivers" are loaded with "hits" and even scratches and edge bruises -- but happily not this one. Both rims are even and virtually mark-free. All design details, especially the portrait, are evenly impressed and reasonably sharp (for the grade assignment). The flan presents a soft green-golden color. King James sat on the throne for only a few years, and most of his gold is very rare, certainly so as fine as this piece.
