1668 (22 Sept.) letter signed "S Pepys" to Edward Gregory, clerk of the cheque at Chatham regarding the wreckage of H.M.S. Royal Oak, "his Royal highness hath beene pleased by his order bearing date the 17th instant to direct us to cause the officers that have hitherto beene borne on her to be forthwith discharged". Also signed by Sir William Penn, William 2nd Viscount Brouncker and Sir John Mennes. Paper in good condition. An interesting piece of Naval history and a sought after signature.
H.M.S. Royal Oak, launched in Portsmouth in 1664 and burnt in battle by the Dutch 1667. Admiral Sir Christopher Myngs was her captain and served in the Second Anglo-Dutch War, the Four Days' Battle and the St. James' Day Fight in which it was sunk.
