William III gold Specimen "Act of Toleration" Medal 1689 SP61 PCGS, cf. Eimer-314 (plain edge unlisted), cf. MI-683-64 (there, in silver; plain edge unlsited), Vanhoudt 1689-29 var. 48mm. 48.59gm. Plain edge. By P. H. Müller. GVILIELMVS REX ANGL. SCOT. FRANC. ET HYBERN. PATRIÆ DECVS ANGLIÆ PRÆSIDIVM Laureated, armored, and draped bust right // TE SERVATORE NON SERVIMUS Britannia, accompanied by Religion and Liberty, grasps the hand of William; in exergue RESTITUTORI BRITANNIÆ 1689. Struck in Nuremberg as part of a series issued by Friedrich Kleinert, this specimen commemorates the passing of the Toleration Act of 1689, which granted freedom of worship to those who dissented from the Church of England. Available with some regularity in silver, this Medal-type is extremely rare in gold format, this being the only example certified by PCGS to-date and the only specimen locatable by this cataloger at public auction in recent memory. It is likely that this piece was born of a test or presentation strike, a hypothesis not only supported by the rarity of the Metal but the lack of edge inscription that is, per Eimer, present on "standard" gold examples. Historicity and rarity aside, our item teems with originality, steeped in a luminosity that ignites a spectacular tiger's eye and baby blue patina developed across the surfaces. Some chatter is visible in the open expanses but is easily overlooked due to the impact of the high-relief devices, which rise above the fields with confidence and exactitude. A true treasure for the more esoteric collector. From the Coenen Collection HID10510052018 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
