Greco-Roman Marble Head of a Kore- 9.7×6.5×7.5 cm

A beautiful Roman marble head of a Kore dating to the 1st century A. D. in the Greek Archaic style of the 6th - 5th century B. C. Her face has an archaic smile, her hair is worn in tight, wavy tresses above her high forehead. The tresses are worn behind the ears and falling down over the back of her neck. On the back of her head she is wearing a πιλίδιον (pilidion) and "pilleolus" in Latin, a conical, brimless, felt skullcap which was popularly worn in Illyria, Etruria, Ancient Greece, Pannonia and surrounding regions. A Kore is a type of free-standing ancient Greek sculpture of the Archaic period depicting female figures, always of a young age, the symbol of the ideal and the equivalent of the youthful male Kouroi statues. H (with stand) 17,5cm ; H (of the head) 9,7cm ; B (front) 6,5cm ; L (side - tip of the nose to back of the head) 7,5cm. Provenance: private collection (BE) 1980, before collection of M. K.
