Greek Apulian Glazed Pottery Trefoil Oinochoe w/ Ribs

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A fine wheel-thrown pottery oinochoe of a tall and dignified form with a discoid foot, an inverted piriform body, a rounded shoulder that tapers to form the cylindrical neck, a trefoil-style pouring spout, and a bifurcated, high-arching handle with a faint lion head protruding from the lower terminal. Encircling the body are dozens of vertical, pattern-molded ribs that create a textured feel across the exterior, and the entire vessel is enveloped in lustrous, jet-black glaze that has developed faint silvery iridescence. Condition Report: Repair to lower neck and bottom of handle with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. One lengthy but stable pressure fissure running vertically along verso of body and shoulder, with nicks and encrustations across vessel, and light fading to black glaze in scattered areas. Light silvery iridescence throughout.
