Greek Apulian Xenonware Kylix w/ Sea Bird

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. An attractive kylix presenting a classic form and a beautiful decorative program arrived at via fugitive salmon-pink pigment. On the tondo is a long-legged sea bird with a curved beak and feathery wings encircled by an elegant border, and spiraled wavelike motifs adorn the exterior walls - all in characteristic Xenon pink-red over a glossy black glaze. Size: 8.25" W handlespan x 1.875" H (21 cm x 4.8 cm)

Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.) that is inscribed with the name: XENON. The type is distinguished by added pale red/pink decoration over black glaze.

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in the late 1990s; ex-Tom Cederlind collection, Portland, Oregon, USA

Condition Report: Section of rim and handle repaired/reattached with losses to breaklines and touch up to pigment. Chips to rim and minute nicks to foot. Expected surface wear with areas of pigment loss and scuffs commensurate with age. This said, the bird and spiraling wave motifs are vivid.
