Greek Attic Blackware Beaked Oinochoe

[ translate ]

Ancient Greece, Athens, Attic, ca. 5th century BCE. A beautiful wheel-thrown pottery oinochoe with a flat base beneath a tall lower body, a dramatic carination around the midsection, a sloped shoulder tapering to a narrow neck, an elongated pouring spout with a flared tip, and an applied handle with a protruding thumb rest on top and a curled lower terminal. The vessel is enveloped in lustrous glaze of a jet-black hue, and areas of silvery iridescence create an elegant presentation characteristic of fine Attic artistry. This type of vessel would have been used for holding some precious liquid, with the long neck designed to mitigate evaporation. Size: 3.2" W x 4.7" H (8.1 cm x 11.9 cm).

For a strikingly similar example, please see The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 06.1021.106.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-provate Connecticut, USA collection, acquired in the 1980s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
