Greek Attic Pottery Kylix w/ Figural Scene

Greece, Athens, ca. 540 to 530 BCE. An elegant Attic kylix lip cup, the vessel presenting a classic form with a deep bowl, curved lip, and twin, upturned loop handles. The exterior walls are finely decorated via the black-figure technique. Both sides feature a central winged figure - perhaps a siren, harpy, or Erote - between a pair of draped figures, followed by 2 runners, and another pair of draped figures. All figures are delineated with a sense of motion and energy and present fine incised details. In addition, decorative palmettes, also presenting incised details and red fugitive pigment, adorn either side of each handle, and there is a reserve circle adorned by a black ring in tondo at the basin to further embellish the vessel. Of the utmost artistry and technique, a beautiful example associated with the celebratory ceremonies of the Dionysiac cult. Please note that Lucite stand is for photography purposes only. This piece presents strong Attic black-figure painting - a painting technique from the Archaic period. The artist first painted with slipware and then carefully scratched into it with a type of needle in order to incise the lines, thus creating delightful figures and patterns.
