Greek Blackware Ribbed Trefoil Oinochoe
Greek, Magna Graecia, southern Italy, ca. 4th century BCE. A blackware pottery wine and water pitcher with a bulbous ribbed base, trefoil spout, and rounded handle. A distinctive maker's mark is in the form of an impressed "X" at the base of the handle. Size: 3.5" W x 4.85" H (8.9 cm x 12.3 cm)
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-collection of William Dale. Mr. Dale was a career diplomat stationed in Turkey in the early 1960's and acquired a vast collection of Greek, Roman, and Near-Eastern treasures.
