Greek Campanian Pottery Kernos (for Offerings)

[ translate ]

Greek colonies, South Italy / Magna Graecia, probably Campania, ca. 4th century BCE. A fine four-potted example of a ceramic kernos, a distinctive vessel to hold offerings. This example features four diminutive bowls of identical size, each standing on a narrow ring foot. Three of the bowls have a fitted lid with a handle at its top, as the fourth presumably once did. A tall bail handle is at the center. The surface is painted a glossy black, and two of the lids also have red rings on them as decoration. Campanian wares, one of the five types of known pottery produced in the Greek South Italic colonies, were made by Greek colonists in the cities of Capua and Cumae. Size: 5.65" W x 3" H (14.4 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in August 2016; ex-private Westerlo, Antwerp, Belgium collection, acquired at an auction house in The Netherlands

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#149683
Condition Report: Repaired from several pieces; this is well done and unobtrusive. Three of the lids are present, although they are all of slightly different designs and may be from different vessels. The lid of one is repaired.
