Greek-Cretan School. Icon depicting St. Agatangelus.Seventeenth centurymm. 797x607. Oil on wooden table with giltd frames divided into 12 panels. Vivid and brilliant colors, some deficiencies and raising of the tempera. Signs of restoration.

Condition Report: Splendid icon of the Cretan school, which represents St. Agatangelus with his teacher Saint Clemente of Ancira, below St. Helena and Constantine near the cross. Above, the representation of God holding the Globe, Christ and the Madonna.Saint Agathangelus; Rome, 3rd century - dead in Ancyra in 312, was a Roman deacon, disciple of Clement of Ancyra, whom he met when he was imprisoned in Rome by the emperor Diocletian. He made the journey back to Ancyra with him, and there in 312 both were beheaded during the reign of Emperor Maximinus. The term Cretan school indicates an important pictorial school, also known as the Post-Byzantine school, a movement that flourished on the island of Crete under the control of Venice between 1204 and 1669. Thanks to this political situation, in particularly after the fall of Constantinople, it was the main Christian artistic center of Greek origin from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century.
