Greek Cypriot Terracotta Askos, Bull Form

[ translate ]

Ancient Greece, Cyprus, Late Cypriot III, ca. 1200 to 1175 BCE. A charming pottery askos in the form of a bull. Standing upon 4 nubbin legs, the ancient animal presents a thick, tubular body as his lengthy neck slants forward, displaying an elongated snout, bulging eyes, and a pair of petite, pointed ears. A cylindrical spout rises upward from the middle of the creature's back, while a perky tail juts from its posterior. Lovely remains of creamy beige pigment adorn the exterior, nicely contrasting the warm orange hue of the terracotta. Size: 6.7" L x 2.6" W x 5.3" H (17 cm x 6.6 cm x 13.5 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-prominent D.K. collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 2000s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
