Greek Cypriot Terracotta Bilbil Juglet

Ancient Near East, Cyprus, late Cypriot I, ca. 1600 to 1050 BCE. An impressive redware "bilbil" juglet with a ring-form base, a bulbous, apple-shaped body, a towering, cylindrical neck, a flared rim, and an arching strap handle. A molded double line wraps around the neck where it meets the handle, while a pair of molded curvilinear bands accentuate the rotundity of the body, meeting on one side in a spiral. Ceramic items manufactured in Cyprus were exported in huge numbers to the Holy Land, and it is in the Holy Land that this piece was likely utilized. Size: 3.3" Diameter x 5.8" H (8.4 cm x 14.7 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-prominent D.K. collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 2000s
