Greek Geometric Bi-Chrome Trefoil Oinochoe

Ancient Greece, Geometric Period, ca. 8th to 7th century BCE. A beautiful wheel-thrown pottery oinochoe with a slightly concave discoid foot, a bulbous piriform body with a tapered shoulder, a cylindrical neck surmounted by a trefoil-style pouring spout, and a slender strap handle arching between rim and shoulder. The beige-slipped vessel presents wondrous red-slip decorations including concentric bands coursing around the body, crosshatch-filled triangles along the shoulder known as "wolf's teeth," a pair of enclosed zigzagging stripes along the neck, rings beneath the spout, and linear motifs on the handle. Condition Report: Repair to tip of pouring spout and handle reattached to terminals, with resurfacing and light overpainting along break lines. Minor chips and abrasions to base, body, neck, handle, and pouring spout, with light fading to original pigmentation, and minor encrustations. Light earthen deposits and great traces of original pigment throughout. Old inventory label beneath base.
